Robotics is the new genre in engineering which is surpassing all other fields of work today. Robotics is a branch of computer science and engineering which develops a product that can perform various operations. Robots were first invented in 1921 by Karel Capek, a playwright. An actual design was developed in 1938 by Willard Pollard and Harold Roselund. Robots are any mechanical figures which can be programmed to perform a certain task such as picking up an object, moving materials from place to place, move along a terrain and even paint or weld. There are many other applications in the field of science and technology.
Although, it sounds simple, creating a robot is not an easy task. The people in this field need to be computer experts and have a sound knowledge of electronics. It is compulsory to have a degree in the field of technology to take up the career of robotics. One should have the ability to understand how they actually work. They should have knowledge on sensor and feedback principles along with electrical and physics concepts. They should have a working knowledge of software programming and be comfortable with C/C++. Along with solid subject knowledge, a robotics professional should also possess other skills. They should have excellent coordination, creativity, innovative thinking, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills. They should also have excellent communication skills and should be working well with others as they have to work other engineers and technicians in the company.
There are many fields under the robotics genre that one can work under. The tasks vary according to the job and hence the salary. Regular robotics technicians build robots and are also responsible for maintaining and repairing them if anything goes wrong. They are also responsible for developing and testing new equipment required in building a robot. Others might be responsible of on-site installing of robots, writing new programs for development of robots, training others on how to use the robotics equipment safely, welding, work related to hydraulic systems, and other electrical work. There are also specializations such as medical robotics, automation, quantum systems, cybernetics, computer vision, and air traffic systems. Salaries are high for robotics experts ranging from $60,000 to $100,000 and beyond.
The field of robotics is rapidly growing; the scope of expansion is very enormous with new applications being developed in all fields such as medicine, agriculture, education, automation, entertainment, athletics, nuclear power plants etc. There is advancement in the field of artificial intelligence which could mean we can create mechanical structures which can “see” or “think”. As new ideas are being born and being developed everyday, maybe the world will soon be ruled by mechanical objects and artificial intelligence can take over human intelligence.
