Jobs in Visakhapatnam

From a small town of small fishing societies in the early 20th century, Visakhapatnam has exploded economically and grown to be counted as an industrial hub. This increase has been so exciting that vizag is recognized as among of the fastest evolving cities in the country according to a recent study carried out by the United Nations.

The city is host to a large number of companies, mainly heavy industries. Being home to the Vizag port, the largest port in India, has given it the perfect opening leading to the continued growth of petroleum, fertilizer and steel industries. Among these are The Steel Plant in vizag and Hindustan Petroleum Ltd, which were both billion dollar industries pitch forking Vizag in the Indian industrial map. Vizag has two power plants which satisfies the high power requirement of these industries. Other companies in this industry like the Hindustan Zinc ltd, Coromandel Fertilizers, Rain Calcines Ltd, and Ship Yard also have major installations in this city. Therfore the presence of a sizable heavy industry provides employment to thousands of people; both in the service and non-service sector, and boosts the city’s economy.

Due to the well established availabilty of educated and English speaking workforce, the city has also been able to attract a lot of players from the knowledge industry. This has led to a spurt in BPO jobs, with most well known BPO companies recruiting and operating from the city. This in turn paved the way for the fast growing IT industry. Several national and global banking and I.T. majors have set up offices in vizag. These include, Cognizant, Wipro, Satyam, Patni, TCS, HSBC ABN AMRO, Oracle Corporation, Verizon, IBM, Hexaware Solutions etc. The positive efforts of the Andhra Pradesh state government in building infrastructure and alloting land for these companies to set up their offices in vizag’s outskirts has further encouraged the software industry and more such companeis are expected to start oprations here soon. This has coupled with the growth in the real estate sector with various companies initiating housing projects in the city. The Bhaba Atomic Research Center (BARC) has proposed to set in this region. This would lead to an inevitable rise in jobs for science research professionals.

The traditional fishing industry continues to prosper and is in fact on the rise with the exports of tuna doubling over the last decade. Tuna is a major export of this region and is exported to the eastern countries, apart from being sold for domestic consumption. The slated construction of a second port at Gangavaram, is expected to enable the city’s waters to handle the largest international vessels. This would definitely lead to creation of more openings in jobs in this industry. Its traditional importance in shipbuilding continues to be of major importance both for government and private interests. The proposed Vizag Special Economic Zone is expected to further the industrial growth of the city.

Apart from the career openings in various industries, Visakhapatnam as a city has a lot of positives for working professionals. Pleasant & predictable seaside weather, a large cosmopolitan mix, beautiful and well planned urban landscape are among them. The city is well connected to all major cities by road, air and sea. An international airport is coming up on the outskirts of the city which will serve as connecting hub between SE Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It also has a robust public transportation system of buses. Visakhapatnam, therefore, is poised to take its place as a viable destination for a career in several industries.
