Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is the focal business, financial and, commercial center of eastern India. Located on the banks of the river Hooghly, it is also a major military and commercial port. Despite economic decline during pre-liberalized India, the city has experienced an economic rejuvenation since the year 2000, which has led to a spurt in the city’s growth. The continued liberalization of India’s economy and election of Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya have resulted in the bettering of the city’s wealth.

Kolkata’s economic revival was directed largely by IT services, with the IT sector growing at 70% yearly (which is twice that of the national average). Places like Salt Lake, Rajarhat have been designated as IT hubs and several IT parks & electronics complexes have come up in these areas and more have been announced. Major Indian and international players like HSBC Electronic Data Processing India (HDPI), ICICI OneSource, Gecis, IBM, Satyam Computers, ITC InfoTech, Tata Consultancy Services, Hinduja TMT, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS) and SkyTECH, Wipro have all set up or have announced plans to set up major installations here and are recruiting professionals in large numbers. The continued growth on the infrastructural front, both with regard to public utilities and industry specific, has made Kolkata an important destination for companies and professionals alike.

The past few years have witnessed a rush of investments in the housing infrastructure sector with a number of new projects coming up in the city. The real estate industry has experienced a boom with companies like Keppel Land, DLF, and Singapore-based Ascendas entering the fray. Such large scale construction work require a large number of highly skilled personnel in various fields, therefore is a lucrative destination for professionals in those fields. Kolkata is domicile to many business units run by gigantic Indian corporations with products ranging from electronics to jute. Prominent among these are, Coal India Limited, Damodar Valley Corporation, ITC Limited, Bata India, Birla Corporation United Bank of India, UCO Bank and Allahabad Bank.

The city also has a large industry for unskilled and semi-skilled labour work force, along with various other blue-collar workers in the areas of manufacturing, mining, building, construction trades, law enforcement, mechanical work, maintenance, repair etc. white collar and knowledge workers also make up a huge percentage of the total adult population and the demand for them is always high.

Kolkata also boasts of some of the nations finest educational institutions like The University of Calcutta, Presidency College, Bengal Engineering & Science University, West Bengal University of Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta Medical College. Institutes like the Indian Institute of Management, Asiatic Society, Bose Institute, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences have all received international acclaim and attract the best brains in the country. This naturally attracts as a appealing factor for companies, which subsequently leads to greater employment opportunities in the city.

The city has one of the best public transport systems among the major cities of India. The city is connected adequately by the Kolkata suburban railway, the Kolkata Metro, trams, a multi layered bus system that is run both by private operators and government agencies. Taxis are the prefered mode of hired transport. Kolkata has two major long distance railway stations and an international airport.

The multi-ethnic secular fabric of the society, relatively low cost of living and crime rate( compared to the other metros), an indigenous culture that practices and preaches respect for women and all sections of society are the other positives that make Kolkata a very viable job destination.
