The capital city of the southernmost state in India – Tamil Nadu. Apart from being one of the largest cities in the country, it is also one of the most densely populated cities in the country. Chennai is a port city. It has one of the busiest shipping yards in the country. Its strategic location makes it of much larger importance in trade and of goods in and out of the country. The people living in and around Chennai facing the coastline have fishing as a major occupation. Another huge attraction of Chennai is the Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant located at Kalpakkam which is only a two hour drive from Chennai. This power plant is one of the very few power plants established in the entire country. Kalpakkam power plant is world renowned for its extensive research base and cutting edge technology. A Breeder Reactor project is due on 2010 which when completed, will provide large MegaWatts of power to Tamil Nadu and its neighboring States. Also, to develop such gigantic project requires large number of manpower, technicians, experienced scientists and researchers and managers.
Chennai , apart from being a manufacturing hub and and an IT hub, is also famous for its silk, embroidery and cotton textiles. The silk from Kanchipuram is one of the finest and costliest qualities of silk available in the world. The silk textiles are hand weaved and lined with golden thread embroidery. A typical silk saree costs anywhere between Rs4000 to Rs400000. The cotton textiles industry is also one of the oldest and best in India.
People in Chennai are well educated and there exists a high literacy rate in the state when compared to many other states in the country. Tamil Nadu state’s literacy rate is close to 75%, thanks to the large number of schools, and professional colleges. Anamalai University, Bharathiyar University, Chennai Medical College, Indian Institute of Technology etc, are highly reputed institutes which impart world class education and help in the growth of the region and country.
