Civil & Construction Jobs in India

Considered as one of the first engineering streams, Civil Engineering involves planning, designing and executing structural facilities. The field covers a vast range of engineering works including designing, direction and building activities of public installations like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. The discipline thus presents a whole host of testing profession openings. Apart from the widespread notion of a civil engineer building only bridges and roads, there are other expanded applications like building recycling plants, putting up industry specific installations, water works, road and rail traffic regulatory installations, etc.

A civil engineer is responsible for a complete project, right from conceiving it, through the stages involving research, development & planning, to the actual construction of the project on the necessary level and the maintenance and upkeep of the project. The planning element of their job involves on location exploration and study, viability analysis, trouble shooting/ creating alternate plans to work around obstacles that may occur and the actual draft of structural design. The work has to be done, by complying with the guidelines of the local and central administration authorities and getting the plans agreed to by the appropriate authority. Cost estimation and setting of construction work schedules also form part of the job. The construction work involves working with clients, architects, government officials, contractors and the regular supervision of construction according to standards set. The maintenance and repair of the project is also a part of the work.

Educational qualifications & Specializations:
A bachelor’s degree in engineering is the minimum requirement to become a qualified professional in this field. Students can also continue to research studies in a doctoral or post-doctoral course. Primarily a strong foundation in mathematics and sciences is of immense benefit for accurate understanding of the discipline. Once in the industry, it would be hard to pinpoint a typical career path for a civil engineer. Inside each subfield of civil engineering, and even within different sections of the market within each branch, the particulars of a career path can be different.

At times, depending on the field and firm profile, fresh engineers are given the task of supervising construction in the site, i.e. working as the “eyes and ears” of higher placed design engineers. Likewise, in other areas, entry-level engineers end up carrying out the more everyday tasks of study, design and implementation. These senior engineers, in the meanwhile, move into doing more complex analysis or design work, or management of more complex design projects, or inter group management of other engineers, and into specialized advising on this field including forensic engineering.

Career Prospects:
Construction engineering is a broader field that deals with the construction of projects by assimilating information and technical advice from a various range of professionals like Builder, City Planner, Architect, Civil Engineer and Irrigation Engineer. Civil Engineers can land a job in Government departments, private and public sector industry. With infrastructure becoming the buzz word of all city developmental work in our country, this sector is bound to experience a sharp rise in demand over the next decade and beyond.
